Occupational therapy may be provided in the same settings as physical therapy. In some settings, the two may be integrated into a single session. Occupational therapy focuses on helping people develop fine motor control necessary to perform concentrated tasks like drawing, writing, or lacing. These basic skills later form the basis of more advanced self help and academic skills.
The focus of speech therapy is to improve communication skills, including receptive and expressive language skills and articulation.
Mastery of the various skills and abilities addressed by community-based treatment may be uneven. Complete mastery may never be achieved. Affected individuals may require therapy and services throughout their entire lives. Community-based treatments can and do continue into adulthood.
